Cozy up your fall front porch with these tips for autumn decorating.

As the leaves change color and the air turns cool, you know it’s time for fall—and time for you to dress up your fall front porch. “I always feel like fall is the easiest season to decorate for,” says Janna Allbritton, interior designer and blogger at Yellow Prairie Interior Design. “Nature does the heavy lifting,” she says. Along with cooler weather, fall brings “vibrant colors” and “fun textures” that you can easily incorporate into your fall front porch.

Having a mix of warm, rustic colors and textures will create that quintessential fall feel. In the front entrance, oranges and whites complement the texture of hay bales and corn stalks, while bright fall flowers bring a little green to freshen the look.

Classic Fall Front Porch Essentials

The first thing to do, Janna says, is to “choose one focal point and use any other items to point back to that focus.” For her own fall front porch, a vintage door acts as the centerpiece of her design. Next, to create quintessential fall style, Janna gravitates to pumpkins: “white, orange and green, cozy plaids and rustic textures like corn stalks, hay bales and beautiful fall flowers.”

Design your porch around a focal point. “I like to create the focal point with something tall, so we anchored a perfectly chippy old door using hooks and ties attached to the shutters,” Janna says.

As for the décor, look to local vintage stores. “It’s the best way to find unusual or one of a kind things that will really set your home apart,” Janna says. One-of-a-kind finds are a great way to bring out your own unique flair, and many of Janna’s pieces are local discoveries. “The white table is vintage, the door was a garage sale find and most everything else came from our local pumpkin farm,” she says.

Signs are a great way to showcase the unique flair of your fall porch. This flower basket “Harvest” sign is not only pretty, but also acts as a focal point.

Hands-On Charm

A little touch of DIY can make it easier to fashion your ideal fall front porch and give it an especially homey charm. For an extra boost of color and texture, Janna transformed her chairs from plain wood to a pretty green with spray paint and “used fabric paint to stencil this fun design” onto her pillows. Finally, Janna says, “a graphic punch really completes the look. Use a fun fall sign or create your own.”

Decorating your porch is the perfect way to get into the spirit of fall. “Growing up on an apple farm here in Oregon, we always had fun decorating our little fruit stand for the harvest season,” Janna says.

To create a perfect look that lasts all season, keep practicalities of your fall front porch in mind as you decorate. “This porch gets a lot of wind, so everything needs to be anchored down well,” Janna says. She likes to use “hidden ties to keep the pillows from blowing away.”
