Project House 2023: Details Old as Time
Written by Autumn Krause
Project House 2023 details continue to unfold with a stunning primary bedroom that’s full of old-world touches like historically inspired moulding and blue and white Delft tiles.
For Project House 2023, it’s all in the details. History is the equivalent of Cara Fox’s Pinterest board. Cara, who is the co-owner of the Fox Group and the focus of our Project House 2023, draws inspiration from design hallmarks of the past to create timeless interiors with old-world beauty. The primary bedroom in the Fox Group’s speculative house is no exception! From custom woodwork to Delft tiles, Cara takes design details that have stood the test of time and gives them an updated interpretation in Project House 2023. “The primary bedroom will feel warm, cozy and sophisticated,” Cara says. “I selected custom woodwork to add an element of well-crafted artistry and Delft tiles to give the space a unique and stylish twist.”
Historically inspired woodworking will fill the primary bedroom. Picture frame moulding, painted a creamy vintage white paint from Laura Ashley, along with base, case, crown and mouldings on the walls, take references from old-world versions. “We will use lovely historical moulding profiles from Woodgrain Molding to bring the vision to life,” says Cara. “Using historical profiles adds so much authentic character into the room and sets the tone even before any furniture is present.”

Delft tiles also bring a historical and personal element into the primary bedroom and will be used in the fireplace surround. Delft tiles originated in the mid-1600s in the Netherlands and were inspired by the very popular and ancient art of blue and white chinoiserie porcelain from China. Each tile is an individual work of art. This Dutch trend of delft tile made its way to Britain and then ultimately to the United States. Evidence has suggested that delft surround fireplaces were made and loved in Jamestown and Williamsburg here in America. “We wanted to incorporate delft tile into this bedroom to bring in a historical charm with some whimsy,” Cara says.
Further historical layers will be added to the primary bedroom with an iron and brass four-poster canopy bed from Charles P. Rogers. Four poster beds were seen frequently in early America and were often used to provide extra privacy and make a room feel elegant. “The black iron in the bed will pair beautifully with the soapstone hearth of the fireplace,” Cara says. Finishing touches will include unlacquered brass hardware from Emtek. Beneath the bed at the center of the room will be a traditional style rug from Rugs.com. “The rug has a subtle pattern of blue and cream that will pull from the walls and the Delft tile on the fireplace,” Cara says. Finally, a chandelier and sconces from The Fox Shop will add finishing touches. The lights will bring sparkle and shine to the room while maintaining a traditional and historic feeling through their silhouette.
With historical details woven throughout the primary bedroom with classical moulding profiles, Delft tiles, and a four poster bed, the primary bedroom tells a new story through time tested elements.
