DIY Faux Ceiling Beams

Deck your ceilings with faux exposed ceiling beams to uplift your entire home.

I love the look of wood beams on a ceiling. However, real wood beams can get expensive, not to mention heavy to DIY. But Decorative Ceiling Tiles offers faux wood beams that look realistic and are a fantastic DIY option. They’re affordable, light weight and easy to install. So, let’s update the living room ceiling with beams and beadboard.

What You’ll Need

Decorative Ceiling Tiles has options for stain colors and textures, including primed faux wood beams you can paint or stain yourself. I decided on four 8×8 light walnut faux beams with a hand scraped finish. I also gathered 1x10x8 boards, 4×8 sheets of beadboard, brad nails and liquid nails.

What You’ll Do

I started with the beadboard. I used a combination of liquid nails and brad nails to install them, lining up the sheets with a laser level. Next, I filled the nail holes and caulked the seams to get it ready for paint.

Now is the fun part—adding the beams. For my DIY faux ceiling beams, I ripped the 1x10x8 boards down to size (1x8x8) and attached them into the joists. These act as anchors to install the faux beams. If you have crown molding, notch it out so the beams can slide in. I attached the beams to each side of the 1x10x8 boards using wood screws. Counter sink the screws, so they don’t stick out, then fill the screw holes with wood filler and stain the patches to match the beams. The beams even came with matching stain, so I could touch up if needed.

Finishing Touches on the DIY Faux Ceiling Beams

Once everything is complete, double check that you’ve filled all the holes. I just love the way it turned out in my house.
