A DIY New Jersey Farmhouse With Vintage Charm

What You’ll Need:

  • Measuring tape and pencil
  • ½-inch painter’s tape
  • Trowel
  • Joint compound
  • Paint, in brick color of your choice
  • Paint roller
  • Gray or white paint of choice
  • Paint brushes

What You’ll Do:

  1. Measure your space and mark where the bricks will be. Most standard bricks are 8” wide by 3 ½” tall. Use a pencil to lightly mark off the rows, leaving ½” in between each row and on either side of each brick.
  2. Tape off the brick shapes with the painter’s tape. The tape should go into the ½” gaps between each row, which creates your grout line. For the vertical lines, stagger the brick to give the wall an authentic look.
  3. With the trowel, smooth joint compound over the area until it’s about ½” thick. It’s fine to cover some of the tape, but try not to cover the tape where possible.
  4. Smooth the joint compound as best you can, then carefully pull the painter’s tape off. The joint compound should not be fully dry when you pull the tape off.
  5. Let the joint compound fully dry.
  6. If you want a white-washed brick look, skip to step 7. For exposed bricks or red bricks, use a paint roller to paint the wall in your base color of choice, followed by additional colors, such as gray or white, if desired. For an uneven look, use a sponge to dab the paint onto some of the bricks. Let the paint dry.
  7. With a paint brush, add a coat of gray or white paint to all the grout lines. Let it dry completely; touch up as needed.
